Day 222, San Simeon – Lake Cuchina, CA, 255kms, Nov 11th 2

After a nice breakfast we got going at a reasonable hour, as today’s plan was to see Hearst Castle, recommended to us by several other travellers. I arrived at the visitor centre early, and it was already quite busy. Veterans day meant lots of people were out doing things. We booked a tour, Tanguy showed up, then we took a bus up the hillside. Hearst Castle was basically a private estate built by a very wealthy man between the 1920’s and 30’s. It was extremely opulent, heavily European influenced with plenty of priceless artefacts from all over the world. And interesting tour with great views of the coast, and lovely gardens.

We carried on our way, heading north to the Elephant Seal vista, where we could watch the large females and offspring relaxing on the beach, and the males fighting each other for territory. Strange animals. By this point it was after midday and we’d better hurry up if we wanted to get some miles south.

After a roadside snack lunch we took busier roads and the 101 south, until 4:30 as the sun was disappearing to a coastal campground. This was full, and the hosts recommended a lake inland as our best bet. Along the way we passed an all Danish village, complete with flags and architecture. We arrived at dusk at a campground which fortunately had space and set up for the night.

Hearst Castle is a typical example of US lack of culture. When rich, show it off, get the right stuff from Europe and put it all together in a completely wrong way! Quite ridiculous but may be an interesting visit though!
Do elephant seals still stink as I remember from Cabo?
The Danish village might be interesting for a change 😉
Almost in LA now! Getting closer to home yay!!
