We got up at a reasonable hour and cooked breakfast, then packed up our campsite that was home for the last 4 days. It’s was a nice sunny day, and we headed south along the 101. Our first detour was just after Klamath; on my map of the Redwood Parks area had a loop road along the beach through the forest a ways. We turned off and rode along the estuary to the beginning only to find it was a one way road; we doubled back, then at the turn off back to the coast, and we began the small single lane gravel track.
We stopped at a bluff view point; nice views, we were a long way up the cliffs. We carried on to another view point, where we got chatting to a young American couple who had just packed up their camp. Carried on the road where we spotted a group of seals on the beach in the estuary; we stopped by the beach track at the bottom of the hill to see if we could get a better look. After a short hike we watched the harbour seals and sea lions for probably hours, hunting salmon in the river mouth. The steep sand bank gave us great views of them gracefully swimming under water as well as surfacing.
Eventually we had to get going – it was well past lunchtime by now and our stomachs growled. A few miles further down the 101 we took another detour (down a ‘senic corridor’ as they call them) through the redwood groves. Out the other end were large meadows, home to an elk population.
We stopped further down to take a few snaps, then carried on until we got to the beach where they had picnic tables. We made some sandwiches, and started looking into camping options for the night. The road took us passed some huge coastal lagoons, then back through the forest and another detour to take the slow way into Trinidad. From Trinidad we found the best option for the night, a private campground a few mins out of town that had included showers and such good things.
All in all, hardly any distance covered, but so much to stop and see so it was a good day!
South you go, all migrating species do at this time of the year, so there must be a logic to head that way.
Into California, where there are some serious forest fires still blazing, stay tuned for local information!
Wildlife is back in your tales and pictures, which makes for nice viewing and slower progress.
I remember from Cabo that seals and sealions stink, they still do?
Off for some serious rally stages now.
