Boy does it get cold at night!!! The sun didn’t get to us hidden under the tall trees and getting out of the sleeping bags was tough but not as tough as sliding into our frigid clothes! We got there in the end, dressed and… cold!
We had planned to head for the nearest place we could get cell reception to get an update on weather. We knew the coast was going to get wet for the coming days but inland was going to be real cold… so we had to find a happy medium. A few hundred meters from our campsite was a little restaurant, we figured we would start there for breakfast then pack up and make a move.
At the restaurant we met a guy from South Africa who lived in Florida (he saw our Florida plates and asked where from…) when he realized we were from over seas he offered to buy us breakfast and we got to talking. Nice guy, and like us, happy to come across a foreigner for a change.
Breakfast done and we packed up headed SW towards Medford where we would update our weather and make plans accordingly. We still wanted to see more of the Oregon coast along the 101, but it was forecast to rain for the coming days there so not the right time. We did find out that Crescent City in California was going to be spared so we headed that way.
Along the way we stopped for some healthy food at an organic store and before we knew it we were riding the sweeping curves along the 199 into California.
That same road took us through the Redwood NP and into our campsite under the giant trees. With the tent set up in the old growth damp forest we headed into town to find some food and warmth. We ended up at SeaQuake microbrewery where we found what we were looking for.
After dinner we went back to our home in that dark dark forest! Zoe read her kindle while I spent time taking pictures in the dark…

The cold drives you south to better temperatures…and before you know it you’re in California !
Redwood picture and stars by the million are super !
Good luck with the weather and wifi ;-)..

You made it to California where it never rains, but there are heavy forest fires all over (so they say on tellie here).
Not only did you live an extraordinary adventure, but the trip in itself is a remarkable achievement.
Camping in such a dense and high grown forest will get you damp mornings for sure.
The night pictures are exquisite, we can see stars here with open skies at night still, but nothing compares to your skies in Northern California.
Baci,
PS. On Sunday comes Christian with the Big Healey!
