Day 186, Maupin OR –  somewhere on NF11 OR, Oct 6th, 279kms 4

Unfortunately our peaceful spot was less peaceful in the middle of the night when the trains thundered past (right on the other side of the river)… Ah well. Around 0830 the sun rose over the hills and gave our tent some much needed sunlight to warm up. We cooked a luxurious breakfast (stopped at grocery store last night) then packed and left our beautiful little spot. Fuelled at the only place we’ve seen in about 100miles, then continued the twisty road through the plains to MT Hood.

The only fuel stop around here…

Beautiful fall colours along the road

As we got closer we were back in Pine forest. We stopped at the base of Mt Hood for photos/the view, then carried on to a turn off up the mountain to Timberline Resort, a big ski field. Chunks of snow littered the lodge; it was cold up here! Summer skiing was still happening on a glacier. We had a short walk then headed to Detroit Lake, about 2hours ride south.

After a short stretch on the freeway we were back on narrow, winding forestry roads. We can see why Oregon is a motorcyclists heaven… They were all Tarmac also making for smooth riding, with bright red and orange maples sticking out between the pines. Once at Detroit we needed a small rest, and uploaded the next route. We took fuel, groceries and another short stretch of freeway before taking a single lane NF11 through the trees. Very little traffic. We had to keep an eye out for rocks on the road but it was in other wise good nick.

After 1/2hr we started looking for somewhere nice to pitch the tent; passed two tent trucks, plus empty pads marked with a fire ring, before finding the right one. It was up above the road, and had unlimited leftover firewood from when loggers or the like had cleared the area. We set up camp, Tanguy got into fire making with gusto, we cooked dinner on an overturned log and enjoyed a very quiet evening. No trains tonight!

Great see you guys made it down pretty much the same roads I’d been. Wondering if you got this from the route map I left for you? You made that turn down that beautiful empty paved forest road through the forest south of Mt Hood via Breitenbush to Detroit. One of my favourites. And now you’re on Hwy 22, which was closed both times I was down that way – had really wanted to try that. Yes, Oregon is a rider’s paradise, if you’re adventurous and pick the right time of the year, which you have done!

      Hi Bob,

We just picked the roads that looked the most fun on our map and sort of headed in the right direction. It’s definitely a bunch of fun. NF11 is also a fantastic road, worth doing!

Every day a little update, makes for a good start of the day!
Colours now turn certainly Indian, so it’s not limited to Canada.
Private camp sites still available, narrow winding roads.
But wildlife is certainly missing here.
    Up to the next post
