Day 151, Bayview WA – The Cudz WA, 359kms Sept 1st 3

September the 1st and by the look of the day count we have now been on the road for 5 months… they say time flies by when you are having fun, and quite honestly it doesn’t feel so long ago that we were stuck in snow in a Colorado, crossing the vast plains of Texas or riding with new friends in the northern parts of Alaska.

So, another day begins with a pack up and taking off in a set general direction and see where the road takes us… As it stands today, it took us to the middle of nowhere. We decided to stay away from the “Shield roads” which in the US are the main highways. We stopped for lunch in Newport and took away a slice of huckleberry pie to have later.

We followed the Pend Oreille river heading north and stopped for our desert under the shade of a bridge overlooking the river. From there we joined the “WA20” headed west which on our map is marked as a scenic byway. The road was quiet enough and fun along the mountain sections. We decided to try and go as far as Kettle falls and spend the night there. When we got to Kettle Falls and saw what what going on there at the fuel station we quickly decided to keep going!

Plenty of daylight left so we headed for Republic. Google maps and Zoe’s camping app indicated there were a few campsites around that area. Now then, things to know about this day where we will end up sleeping in the boonies… it’s Labor Day week end here in North America. And that’s just as popular for going out and camping as what memorial weekend was back in the end of May. In other words, the world, its dog and the dogs flees are out playing and as it so happens, in Republic, there is a big fair / rodeo going on! The campsite had turned into a car park so we weren’t staying there for the night.

Nice ride through the fields of gold

So, with a sun getting lower in the sky we pushed on with no set plan. There weren’t any advertised campsites ahead of us so we figured we would head into the woods. Trouble is, its very much a farmland country here with lots of gates/fences and not too many woods! We took a smaller road heading north that might be quieter and kept on going… Eventually and pretty much as it got dark we found a small grassy side road leading nowhere and we set up there for the night.  We used our tarp for a picnic blanket and had some dips, beer, olives and such things… Apart from a few cows, deers and probably a few small rodents things were very quiet.

Camping in the wild? I conclude that you’re out of bear-country then!
Eventually you’ll end up again in the world of humans.
Will you still be able to re-adapt?
    Big surprise!
Baci on Monday morning, September 4th, “la rentrée” in Europe = start of work for schools and workers after a 2-month holiday sleeper. Next holidays are in 6 weeks.
How strange the economy doesn’t pick up.
