After a rather long sleep sleep in (still looks dark inside with a tarp over the top!) we got up and cooked ourselves eggs and veggies for breakfast, got ready and headed off in to the park. A stop at the busy visitor centre to check out hiking options, we also learned that Going-to-the-sun rd was nowhere near ready to be opened, contrary to what the newspaper led us to believe. Bummer. We drove the beginning section along Lake McDonald, then through dense forest to Avalanche Car Park(at the end of the open road) which was very full.
We did a nice 5mi round trip hike along a river up to Avalanche Lake. The whole way it reminded me so much of Fiordland National Park back home, with the green ferns and moss everywhere in the damp forest, to the steep rocky cliffs covered in cascading waterfalls from the glacial melt. Quite a difference from the National Parks we have been visiting further south. We ate some trail snacks at the lake, which had a cold wind blowing across towards us. Unfortunately the clouds had rolled in also. The hike was busy with a lot of people out and about, so we continued our walk until the end of the lake. On the way back we stopped at the Lodge for a proper feed. At this stage it was almost dinner time, so had a meal followed by a local speciality, huckleberry pie. Yum! Headed back to base camp, only a short drive out of the park, where we showered, Tanguy got a fire going (enjoying his new axe..!) for a few s’mores, then bed.-Zoe
It looks very different indeed. Very humid and lots of pine trees. How high are you now ?
