Day 74, Yellowstone N.P. WY – Helena MT, 293kms 2

Wow! This was the best shower ever!!! we are back in civilisation as we like to call it and finally in presence of warm running water after 12 days camping in the national parks with limited facilities (cold running water- yes, toilets- yes, that’s it)

Anyway, we said our farewell to Yellowstone national park after a full week of exploring and headed north towards Glacier national park. The trip is slightly too long to undertake in one day so we split it into 2 easy riding days. Today’s leg took us from the Madison campground near west Yellowstone to Helena in Montana where Zoe found a reasonably priced AirB&B which advertised unlimited hot water for showers and laundry available to guests! So we jumped on that deal since we were about 10 days overdue a good wash and clean clothes are now scarce.

The ride up was good for the 1st half, slight hills and dry with little traffic but after lunch (in Ennis MT) things took a turn! Roads became straight the wind picked up to the point where we couldn’t leave our bikes for fear they would fall over and cloudy skies turned to rain. And it remained that way for about 2 hours until Helena where the skies cleared up, the wind dropped and the rain stopped.

Getting ready for some serious rain in super windy conditions

So here we are now, clean, with clothes to wear and Wifi (also something we haven’t had in a while) catching up on blogs, editing (deleting a lot) of the photos we took over the last 2 weeks and relaxing on a real bed.

We are now also passed 45 degrees north so over half way between the equator and the North Pole… That puts us 21 degrees south of the arctic circle which as the crow flies is about 2350kms away. Of course we take detours and plan to go further north than that.

Passing 45.5 degrees north in Ennis MT

The vastness of this place is slowly dripping in, still difficult to completely work out but your daily travel story helps to go from imagine to “understand”.
Wind, rain and straight roads, not a good biker’s day!
    Baci till next post

Time to go from A to B which can lead to un-interesting roads to take and go through the middle of nowhere and this time completed with a good shower and strong winds. The good thing is…. after rain comes sunshine but they never say how long after….Anyway, you made it to a well needed body wash ;-). Now you can shake hands again haha… Time to take care of your bikes too !
