We had set our alarm early in preparation for a big hike today. Out of bed, had our hot drinks and some food, on our bikes by 7:45 and into the park. We stopped by Jenny Lake viewpoint to see if the lake was still; it was and perfect for some Mountain reflection shots. After spending some time admiring the stunning scenery we carried on our way to the trailhead car park.
We set off on our hike up the Casade Canyon, unsure how far we would make it due to warnings of high snow levels still. The first 2.5 kms were along Jenny Lake; it was easy with nice views, we spied marmots along the trail, cool animals to watch. As soon as we turned uphill towards Canyon however, large avalanches of snow blocked our path and made the going abit more technical. There were also still large snow drifts in the shade of the pine trees that covered up sections of the trail. As we followed the river up we were treated to some amazing views of the steep, rocky Mountain cliffs on either side and a lush green valley surrounding the river. We saw plenty of fresh moose tracks and sign but unfortunately didn’t see one today. As we got further up, we got incredible views of Grand Teton and the cliffs. We made it to the trail junction (that led over mountain passes either side) around 1300. We tried to hike a little way further but realised there was too much snow. Got a good view of the ‘cascade’ rapid/waterfall before we turned back though.
On the way down the snow had gotten mushy in the hot sun, not good for falling through and slippery going! We heard a loud rumble and got to see an avalanche far up the side of the cliff, very cool. We saw a rockfall also, reminding us of the dangers in alpine environments.
The views were worth it though, very cool canyon, we stopped several times to rest our tired feet and hunt for moose on the way down; didn’t make it back to the car park until around 5:30pm. We hiked a total of 20kms in less than ideal conditions and the legs, shoulders and back were a touch sore during the last few kilometers.
We had dinner and a beer at a restaurant at Moose Junction inside the park(halfway back to camp), then back to camp to clean up and get a good rest.
And, dreaming of coming back late summer so we could do the summit pass and loop through paintbrush canyon ….

HELLO…Hello…hello…elo…oooooo Do you hear the echo ? π
Absolutely stunning pictures T ! Ideal weather, and an expert behind a good camera !
I guess the marmot was waiting for you to come into your frame ? Lucky shot !
You know that bears are most hungry at this time of the year ?
Just checked, In a strait line…(well almost) you’re 3.174 Miles by bike from Prudhoe Bay… and the way strait back to West Point is 2.653 Miles. Now, you tell me how many Miles you really did since you left ?
After this long hike you might be a little stiff tomorrow morning… 20km is a lot especially in these kind of tracks.
Next time I see you, you will be amazingly fit and slim ! (Mama says, “pay attention to your back”)
Take care both of you and don’t forget to take some cheeky bone for the bear.
Good night !
xxx Mum on watch.
So far we have done around 8000 miles, we do take a lot of detours. I guess it will be at least another 5 or 6000 before we get to Prudhoe Bay. Still haven’t seen any bears so we are ok! Not too stiff today, all good. Back is fine again.
Hey, I’m back π
