Today we spent the day on Route 66. Zoe had never been on this famous highway and even though it was a major detour, it seemed worth it. We left leasurly after a nice breakfast at the “Toasted Owl” in downtown Flagstaff. The first 50 miles of the old Route 66 are now know as Interstate 40, not quite so charming. We got onto the ‘real’ deal just before Seligman and headed on west from there.
We stopped along the way at Seligman for some tourist behaviour, took lots of pictures of the old buildings and cars looked around in the tourist shops, bought our “Route 66” pannier sticker, and carried on towards the next place of interest being Hackberry General Store.
Hackberry has a old fuel station now transformed into a gift shop but never the less a cool place to check out with its old cars finishing off their days in the desert sun.
Last but not least we finished off in Kingman, a major city that had the benefit of being on the I40 so didn’t get neglected the way the other places were once the big interstate road opened up.
In Kingman we had a tour around the Route 66 museum, and a coffee, root beer float and some apple pie with ice cream. It was a long ride, about 540kms return, so we needed to fuel to make it back to Flagstaff. The ride back was long, very long, and it got cold once the sun set…
A long day spent on the mother of highways and I have no doubt we will sleep well despite the cold and windy conditions.

That is so ” Iconic ” Really worth a visit indeed even if you had to drive back all that way. Zoe must have appreciate it and we do too.
The pictures you took are so cool, it gives me a nostalgic kick from back in my youth, the only movies we had in Belgium came from the USA where we could see these kind of cars ….my father used to have a Chevrolet Bel Air light blue/white once…Yeah once upon a time haha…
The famous “Jukebox” in witch we had to insert a dime to personally pick out a vinyl record to listen to our favorite singer……yes yes we had that in Belgium too…:-)
It’s an interesting part of your trip. Thank you !
Haha, back on route 66 the mother of all roads (in the USA at least!)
Nice reading, makes my day, every day!
