Day 17, Gila NM – Springerville AZ, 370 kms 2

Last night was cold! Freezing cold! Lucky for us we were camping at a hot spring so straight out of the sleeping bag we hopped into the hot water and thawed!

Shortly after that we were on the road. The lady who runs the campsite told us about a famous “bike road” known as Devils Highway or Highway 666 which is now Highway 191. The 110 mile section between Clifton and Alpine climbs from 3000 to 8000′ with hundreds of curves… a lot of fun on a motorcycle. So we took the detour and it was well worth it.

Crossing into Arizona

We finally used the portion of our tires that had been neglected since Florida! Of course it was slow going and the 180kms took close to 3 hours. The start of the road took us through a huge copper and gold mine after which traffic disappears and the road is just there to be enjoyed. Along the way we saw some deer and elk, beautiful scenery, most of which we probably missed since we had to keep our eyes on the road. There is no room for mistake on the “Devils Highway”.

Along he way we climbed so much there was snow on the side of the road and we got to the point where the grip warmers were turned on. We are a long way from the hot desert plains of Texas! We weren’t expecting to see snow just yet… to be honest I wasn’t looking forward to the prospect of having to camp in this! So we didn’t… We got to Springerville and found a cute motor lodge that was way more appealing that the tent.
