Day 12 -Guadeloupe Mountains NP TX 3

Full moon over our tucked in spot

It was a gusty night at our homey tent site, picking up at 1am and not letting up. However the full moon over the dessert was a beautiful sight. We got up nice and early and 6:15 to hike to the summit of Mt Guadeloupe, the highest point in Texas. We could hike straight from our campsite, so after a quick breakfast we packed our bags and headed on up. It was a beautiful sunny day, however the wind does not let up around here! It was quite chilly up there despite the beating sun. The trial wound through exposed dessert hills, pine trees, and some steep cliffs till the peak. Unfortunately for me, my knee packed in and started giving me grief up the steep, rocky trail. Not wanting to quit I kept at it, which in hindsight wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had…. By a long shot!

That’s 2670 in metres… 1000m elevation gain from camp

The views from the top were pretty good, 360 views of the dessert plains and the rest of the park. Signed the little book, brief chit chat with other hikers and back down we came. Took me a fair bit longer due to my knee no longer wanting to bend, rather unfortunate and uncomfortable. Bit of a lesson for me, that just because my mind wills it, doesn’t mean I can ignore my body’s limits.

Didn’t finish until nearly 3, on a good day I reckon we’d have been down by about lunchtime. Back to the campsite to lick my wounds, and hang out there the rest of the day while thinking of Carlsbad Caverns tomorrow. Hence me writing the blog for a change while Tanguy starts the campsite chores-lucky me 🙂

First real hike, first physical issues.
    Mind and body, eternal problem.
Hope you can ride the Beemer in comfort.
