Day 10, Menard TX – Pecos TX, 400kms 2

Today brought us the most dramatic change in scenery so far. We left the lush green pastures and the cattle behind and entered the dusty arrid oil fields of western Texas. The temperature too switched from a fresh pleasant spring temperature to a hot dry desert heat… All in the space of 400 or so kilometres.

Desert scenery as we slowly leave the green pastures of eastern Texas behind

The ride was fast and apart from the gusty conditions making for interesting moments we covered a lot of ground in a relatively short days riding. We stopped a few times to take in the scenery, refuel the bikes (as I mentioned yesterday, fuel stations are few and far between so we fill up whenever we see one) had a nice lunch stop at a little Mexican joint (seems that there are no other options around here!) and had a close up look at one of the many oil wells around.

By the end of the day we managed to get 100 more kilometres than we planned and are spending the night in Pecos TX just 100 Kms from the border with New Mexico. Pecos appears to be a major oil & gas place with the majority of the population being oil workers. There are no campsites here so we are in a hotel once again.

Friday night at a local Pecos tavern

Tomorrow we should see our first National park (finally) where we will spend some time stretching our legs after the 3000 Kms it took us to get here.

So far, so good, you’re slowly getting in a road trip environment.
Enjoy the weekend, the trip, each other’s company!
